How itemized bill splitting works
The tool adds each person’s subtotal, calculates the shared tax and tip, and assigns each person a proportional share. One-cent rounding differences are distributed so all shares exactly match the grand total.
Example: If one person’s food costs twice as much as another’s, that person is allocated approximately twice as much tax and tip (assuming the same taxable and tipping rules apply to all items).
For mixed taxable and nontaxable items or separate service fees, compute those adjustments manually before using this simplified estimator.
